Lack of Progress Report

I had high hopes, or at least an ambitious To Do List, for this half term. However, pressing Real Life issues such as losing the first weekend to sorting a new home insurance policy then emptying the loft in preparation for The Great Work meant that my plans to play a Dos Amos campaign game were put on hold. I got some painting done though. My 1/600 scale Flight Decals order arrived, so I used them and aim to play a game with my lad soon. 
I also put the trees together for some Dos Amos specific terrain, a mix of tropical trees which can doubtless be used elsewhere in future. 
scatter and flock will be added this week. We also managed to get a flying visit over the passes to see the family on God's Own Peninsula (the Wirral), took this shot (wife was at the wheel!)at the highest point of a very chilly looking moorland. Who knows how long we'll get this view, given that the Snake Pass is facing an uncertain future.. 
And of course a lot of hobby reading has been done. Hopefully more progress will be made this week. I have a tentative plan to play a game this coming weekend. We shall see.

Andy T voyaged over the passes today to Sheffield, via the less travelled route of Winnats Pass, due to the Snake Pass being shut (for who knows how long?) Andy was keen to give his NVA army a run out, a Panzer Brigade that has been prepared for the Cold War Commanders big game next month at The Unit in Staffordshire. Facing them was a hurried deployment of the 82nd Airborne, deployed from Italy into Austria as part of NATO's southern flank, where the decision to override niceties such as neutrality has been taken, in order to stem the WarPac advance.  The table. NATO would advance to contact from the left.  A rough TO&E: EAST GERMANY: 2 Panzer battalions of 9x T55AM2 AA of Strela SAM for 1 battalion, a ZSU23-4 for the other. Supported by an infantry battalion in BMP1 IFVs. Artillery support came from a 2S1 122mm SP guns. Crisis Point- forces and Day One

DAY 1  The Soviet aim was clear- advance across the board, reduce enemy forces but bypass strong resistance and continue the push to Prague. The Soviet forces available were:  224 Motor Rifle Regiment  Mech battalion 2 HQs 3 companies of 6 infantry + 3 M3 half tracks AA M14 half-track with quad .50cals Support company of 2 82mm mortars and 1 DsHK HMG Motor battalion  As above, but mounted in trucks 2 battalions of T44 tanks. 9 tanks + 1 HQ per battalion. The latest in Soviet armour technology and basically what you would expect a tank to look like if a T55 and a T34 had a baby.  Recce- elements of the regimental reconnaissance force- 3 M3 half tracks plus 4 Recce Support T34/85 tanks. Crisis Point 6th & 7th April 2024

Initial briefing and scenario details  The annual gaming meet up, hosted and curated by Richard Crawley, took place this weekend in the usual delightful environs of Dungworth, on the edge of the Peak District, west of Sheffield and east of the moon..  This year, the theme was an alternative history of the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1948, following a failed Communist coup. There are better write ups of this scenario elsewhere-   Andy Ts blog  and  Richard Crawley's blog  have more background detail of the political and military situation of the Soviet reasoning behind the invasion. Suffice to say, myself and Andy were responsible for the CWC2 game, a move towards Prague by Soviet armour and mechanised infantry against a hasty defensive line of Czech forces in entrenched positions.  Below is the Soviet briefing.
